#Topic of the Day (Date-06/Nov/2025)World Tsunami Awareness Day.

Tsunami – The Giant Waves of the Ocean.

Introduction

A tsunami is a series of giant sea waves caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanoes, or landslides. The word “tsunami” means “harbor wave” in Japanese. In deep oceans, these waves travel fast but are small and hard to notice. When they reach shallow waters, they slow down and rise to great heights, crashing onto coastal areas and causing massive destruction. Tsunamis can flood towns and sweep away people, homes, and vehicles within minutes.

Causes of Tsunamis

Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes when tectonic plates shift suddenly, displacing large amounts of water. Volcanic eruptions, landslides, or even meteorite impacts can also trigger them. The larger the earthquake, the greater the risk of a tsunami. Scientists use seismographs and ocean sensors to detect underwater activity and send early warnings to reduce damage.

Effects of Tsunamis

Tsunamis cause huge destruction to life and property. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, for example, killed over 230,000 people across Asia. Floods, pollution, and loss of farmland often follow. Many survivors face long-term emotional and financial problems after such disasters.

Prevention and Safety

Tsunamis cannot be stopped, but early warning systems and public awareness can save lives. When warnings are issued, people must move to higher ground quickly. Countries like Japan conduct drills and build sea walls to reduce damage.

Conclusion

Every year on November 5, the world observes Tsunami Awareness Day to promote safety and education. Tsunamis remind us of nature’s power and the need for preparedness. With science, awareness, and quick action, many lives can be saved. 🌊
